Smoke alarms are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your home and the people in it. We’ve been working in homes across Cumbria since 1997, and it’s something we see time and time again — a properly installed and maintained smoke alarm really can make all the difference.
Make sure you’ve got the right coverage
As a minimum, every home should have smoke alarms on each level of the property, with additional alarms in key areas such as hallways, landings, and living spaces. Kitchens are best protected with heat alarms rather than smoke alarms, to avoid false activations while cooking.
Interlinked alarms give extra peace of mind
Modern interlinked alarms mean that if one alarm detects smoke, they all sound together. This is especially important in larger homes or properties with bedrooms upstairs, as it gives everyone more time to react and get out safely.
Test them regularly
Smoke alarms should be tested once a month using the test button, and batteries replaced when needed (unless they are sealed-for-life units). If an alarm is beeping intermittently, it’s usually telling you something isn’t right — don’t ignore it.
Replace old alarms
Smoke alarms don’t last forever. Most need replacing every 10 years, even if they still seem to be working. Over time, the sensors become less reliable, which reduces their effectiveness.
Get them installed properly
Correct positioning and installation are just as important as having alarms in the first place. Poorly sited alarms can lead to false alarms — or worse, delayed warnings when you really need them.
